Development of an Operational Satellite-Based Flood Monitoring Model for Tanzania

Timely information during water related disasters is of utmost importance for flood preparedness and risk reduction. Real time observation monitoring flooded areas an expensive time-consuming exercise. Satellite remote sensing a quick affordable approach that can be used concurrent floods detection at different scales. This important as it facilitates timely emergency response to disaster management departments, even in scarcely instrumented catchments. study presents novel tracking using satellite technology map affected areas. An open-source algorithm developed employs readily available images the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. Dar es Salaam Singida regions Tanzania were case validation proposed approach. Use made Sentinel-1 GEE coding. The after-flood code was validated with physical extent markers after-event survey points provided by Ministry Water (MoW). findings reveal supports mapping giving promising results after satisfaction from data. Relevant parameters then coded order develop Tanzania. this demonstrate usefulness rapid inundation mapping.
